This article will explain how to create, edit, deactivate, and/or relocate Patient Classifications, otherwise known as Species and Breeds.

Add a New Species
- Within the Menu click Settings > Practice Setup > Patient Classifications.
- To create a new species, click located to the right next to the Species drop-down list.
- Enter the Name of the Species.
- Select a Species Icon from the drop-down list to represent the species.
- By default, the new species will be marked Active. Click the toggle to mark Inactive.
- Sexes: Select any sexes that may apply. At least one option must be selected.
- Click Cancel to close the panel without saving changes.
- Click Save to save the New Species.
The species created will now display in the Species drop-down list on the Patient profile page.
Add a New Breed
- Within the Menu click Settings > Practice Setup > Patient Classifications.
- Select the appropriate Species from the Species drop-down list.
- Click the Add Breed button available on the right side of the page.
- A panel will open to create the breed:

NOTE: The name provided for the breed should be unique within the species it’s being created for; otherwise, an error code may occur. (Example: A Friesian breed cannot be identically named within the Cow and Horse species.)
Mixed Breed
Adding in Mixed Breeds, such as Hound Mix, is not necessary. The option to identify a patient as a mixed breed is available when creating a Patient Profile or when editing Patient Details. This will reduce the number of options to review when entering patient details.
Edit or Replace an Existing Species
Note: Edits made to Existing Species will retroactively change historical patient information. (Example: If a Species Name is changed from Horse to Equine, all patient records previously identified as Horse will now be identified as Equine.)
To replace an Existing Species without impacting historical patient information, you should Deactivate the Existing Species and then Add a New Species
- Within the Menu click Settings > Practice Setup > Patient Classifications.
- Select the Species you want to edit from the Species drop-down list.
- Click on the Edit pencil .
- In the panel that appears, you can edit the Species Name, Species Icon, and/or Sexes applicable for this species.
Note: The Name provided must be unique, otherwise the corresponding validation will be triggered. - Once you have your Species edited, click Save.
Edit, Replace or Relocate an Existing Breed
Note: Edits made to Existing Breeds will retroactively change historical patient information. (Example: If a Breed Name is changed from Bulldog to English Bulldog all patient records previously identified Bulldog will now be identified as English Bulldog.)
To replace an Existing Breed without impacting historical patient information, you should Deactivate the Existing Breed and then Add a New Breed.
- Within the Menu click Settings > Practice Setup > Patient Classifications.
- Select the Species the Breed is currently associated with from the Species drop-down list.
- Press the Edit Pencil to the right of the Breed you want to edit.
In the panel that appears you can:
- Relocate the Breed to a different species using the Species drop-down list.
- Change the Breed Name
- Deactivate the Breed
- To close the panel without saving changes, click Cancel.
- Once your changes are complete, click Save.
Move or Relocate Breeds to New Species in Bulk
- Within the Menu click Settings > Practice Setup > Patient Classifications.
- Select the Species the Breeds are currently associated with from the Species drop-down list.
- Click the checkboxes to select the Breeds you want to move in Bulk. To Select All, click the checkbox at the very top.
- Once multiple Breeds are selected the Bulk Operation panel will appear at the top of the page. Select Relocate.

Deactivating Breeds
- To deactivate an existing breed, press the Edit pencil next to the breed you wish to inactivate.
- In the panel that appears, change the Active toggle to the Inactive state.
You may also perform bulk deactivation on the breeds available for one species.
- Click in the checkboxes to select the breeds you want to perform the bulk operations on.
- Once the breeds are selected the Bulk Operation panel appears where you can Activate, Deactivate or Relocate the selected breeds.
- To deactivate the selected breeds, press Deactivate on the Bulk Operation panel.
If you perform the deactivate operation on the already inactive breeds, they will remain inactive.
Deactivating Species
- To deactivate an existing species, select the active species you want to deactivate from the Species drop-down list.
- Click on the Edit pencil.
- In the panel that appears, change the Active toggle to the Inactive state.
Note: To deactivate a Species, all Breeds within that species must either be Deactivated or Relocated.
